PASSIONS

My passions outside of work also enhance my game development skills. Not just downtime, I also find they provide experiences from meeting specialists to learning something new or overlooked. Since I started designing and managing, these experiences outside of game development have only sustained my interest in the game industry, intended or not.

TABLETOP GAMING

  • I am driven by the ability of Tabletop Gaming to bring people together. The social element is what helps enhance the simulation.

  • Its tactile interface provides players with a more interactive means of learning new skills or a topic. This manual interaction is the core feature that attracts me to this method of learning over video games.

  • Most of the calculations we have to do ourselves, making for a wholly different experience that requires the use of our logic to predict outcomes.

VOLUNTEERING/iMAGINATION

GAMING

Alongside being an advocate for new or niche game systems, I have experience in demoing game systems to new customers of all kinds. Whenever I can, I volunteer at expos and conventions for the group 'iMAGINATION GAMING' where I demo a variety of different board and card games to interested individuals or groups. This has taught me much about oratory communication, preparation and refining a teaching formula. I find this most engaging as a means to not only express my interest in tabletop games, but also to improve my experience in facilitating for people's needs, e.g., finding the game best for them and understanding how best to convey the rules and tailor the experience for them.

ROLEPLAYING GAMES

I default to RPGs for their variety, layers of gameplay and most importantly, the creative potential of improvised narrative. I love to prepare, research and record sessions, to make the next session even better. I also find it an acceptable excuse to introduce concepts and topics to players I wouldn't usually have the opportunity to discuss. I homebrew most of my campaigns to explore the possibilities of mechanical and narrative design, which further improves my understanding of Game Design and the system's ruleset.

WARGAMES

Wargames are a rare medium in which I am competitive. The tactile process of kitbashing, painting, building a list, all leading up to moving imaginary armies across a table, is most satisfying. I enjoy creating a narrative for the characters I paint and the army lists I build. Warhammer is also an obsession of mine, but I am always interested in other rulesets offering more interesting interpretations of war, whether fictional or historical.
